THE MASTERMIND AU MEME

THE MASTERMIND AU
AMBIDEX EDITION
With Round 3 now over, it's about time we had the mastermind meme!
To those who aren't familiar, this is essentially an AU where your character is the one responsible for Round 3's Mutual Killing Game, and all of the carnage that came with it, from the kidnapping to the motives to the trials to the executions! And now, they have chosen to reveal themselves before the remaining members of their class at the final trial!
As such, you are free to play around with this as much as you would like; did your character make a contract with Kyuubey, or did your character put everyone in the Killing Game for a different reason? What is your character's motivation for bringing despair? What do they intend to get out of this seemingly senseless killing? And what does the rest of the class have to do to stop the madness and go home?
There's probably going to be quite a bit of AUing from your character's original canon happening here to make them into the best harbingers of despair they can be, so feel free to go as nuts with it as you want to! And, of course, feel free to tag others with your character's reaction to their classmate's big reveal; it doesn't matter whether or not your character made it to endgame, have fun and mix up the survivor pool as much as you'd like!
Oh, and feel free to describe your character's sweet new Monobear-themed duds, too!!
Original meme text borrowed and modified from loveisanopendoor!

You don't care about how we feel. You ain't even listened to a word I've said. So sure. Tell me the rules.

Right, then. There are two buttons on your podiums: "Hope" and "Despair". Those aren't accurate names for their outcomes, but let me explain.
If all of you pick "Hope", you keep your memories and live, but in exchange, I, Duster, will die. You'll be free to leave, but you'll never learn true happiness.
But if one of you picks "Despair", you all live, and you'll be free to start your new lives in Master Porky's empire! You'll get over the pain of your pasts that have been hurting you for years.
So...which will it be?
[He sits on his throne and rests his chin on his hands. No matter what they pick, it's sure to be a fascinating debacle.]
no subject
[It doesn't make a real difference if he does. Harvey doesn't want to see Duster die. He wanted to save all of them. But he won't destroy everybody just to keep him alive - especially when he's hardly really living to begin with. Was the man he knew the real Duster, or did that person vanish long before they ever met?
Either way it's unnerving, seeing him so nonchalant about the possibility of his own death.]
no subject
He shrugs.] As long as you put on a good show for Master Porky, I'm happy.
no subject
[Harvey doesn't wait for permission. There is nothing to be said; his choice is clear. But he's not ready to throw Duster's life away that quickly. It's been two months. He has this much time left in him.]
When you were in there with us, were you acting? Or did you get your memories wiped too? 'Cause I gotta say, it was a real good performance either way.
no subject
My memories were fine. All I had to do was act like my pathetic old self, before I met Porky, before my life changes for the better. I couldn't get too attached to any of you guys.
no subject
[Harvey crosses his arms behind his back, eyes on the ground as he starts to pace the stage thoughtfully.]
It's like I said, right? Can't be bothered to care about anyone else if you wanna keep somethin' like this running. [He shakes his head faintly.] Funny. That night in the karaoke room, I could've sworn we were really all comin' together.
I did like playing with you.
no subject
I had a lot of fun, you know. It's not every day you do karaoke with a real singer. [He smiles.] We could do that more often, if you promise to stay with me.
no subject
[Harvey pauses where he is, looking speculatively at the Egg of Light.]
I wished I could've helped you, y'know? Watchin' that execution was... [He trails off, shaking his head.] I guess you do know. You were watchin' us after. You don't normally get a second chance, when you lose someone. I want to make this right.
[He sighs deeply, still staring at the Egg.
Then he reaches out, grabs it, and hurls it as hard as he can against the nearest wall.]
no subject
[He leans out of his throne when Harvey eyes the Egg. Something feels off about all this...
He reacts a second too late, and the Egg smashes against the wall.]
How could you do that?! Don't you know how important that thing is?!
[Father figures are the worst, each of them having smashed a thing he took care of against a hard surface. Why, Harvey? How could you? Duster has every right to attack you, but he's busy shaking his head in disbelief and ignoring the faint glow around the broken pieces.]
...What's wrong with you?
no subject
This? [He thrusts an angry finger at the broken shards, not turning to see the glow himself.] This is never happening again!
This ain't your fault, none of this is your fault! I am gonna do whatever I can for you, kid, but you - [An idea hits and he turns outwards, offstage where he suspects these cameras must be.] - you listen to me. Did you think we'd just kill him and go on our merry goddamn way like nothing happened? You want him to throw himself under the bus just so you can get a laugh? Fuck you! People ain't toys! Not us, not Duster! He's one of us now, and we don't toss our own away like things. We take care of each other. That's what families do.
[Because that's what they are, isn't it? They've stuck together through two months of death. They've held each other when they cried. Haruka called Duster her older brother. Harvey calls all of them his kids. Those aren't just pretty words. It doesn't just go away because one of them got mind-controlled or whatever the hell.
Harvey's vibrating with rage, fists tight at his sides. He wishes he had his gun, though the people he really wants to shoot are all elsewhere, watching from a distance like this is some fucking game.]
We're gonna get outta here. But if you think we're all just gonna go home and forget what you did, you have got another goddamned thing coming. We know whose hands all this blood's really on.
no subject
Maybe there is someone on the other side of the camera. Maybe there isn't.
As Duster turns to glare at Harvey, a series of small, faint, glowing orbs fly out of the smashed Egg. Duster catches himself before he can fall to the floor, but every other student receives their missing memories: their kidnapping, their transport to the Hotel of Mutual Killing, the 19 of them being taken to a lab for memory removal.]
no subject
...well, he's not entirely ready to hit that button and watch the results. But when are you ever?]
Alright, Duster, listen -
[He turns, still tense but calmer, and stumbles suddenly as the orb of light flies into him. It's very clear now why the previous memory drops happened while they were all asleep. It's disorienting, like weeks of memory all flashing through his head all at once. Harvey presses a hand to his temple, gaze unfocused as the memory of being jumped at the apartment, subdued and trapped in the dark, floods his senses.]
What the hell...?
no subject
This is humanity's stupidity that Porky warned about. Humans will always believe they're unstoppable, that they can ignore their past mistakes and continue to survive. But in the end, they will sign their own death warrant. What's the point of hoping otherwise?
He holds onto his head, not because it hurts, but because he can't process years of memories and the realization that Porky is more right than ever at the same time.]
You should vote. Don't keep him waiting.
no subject
[It's a stupid question, he realizes a second later. They're about to kill him. It was just an automatic response.]
no subject
[Still holding onto his head, he returns to the throne and watches the other students stare at each other as they debate what to pick.]
no subject
...you know we do.
Nothin' I say is gonna matter to you, I get that. But I forgive you, okay? Just - [He hesitates, remembering another execution.] - just keep your eyes shut and try not to be scared. We'll come back for you, too.
[He steps offstage and returns to his podium, glaring at the others as if daring them to challenge him on this. This isn't the end of the game. They agreed a long time ago to stick together and save their dead, but that won't end it either. It's not gonna be over until the Mastermind - the real Mastermind - is dead at their feet.
Harvey grips the sides of his podium, meets Duster's gaze levelly, and votes.
Hope.]
no subject
Ah.
[He stands up and crosses his arms.]
I'm disappointed you all chose that, but it can't be helped. [A herd of Monobears walk onstage towards Duster.] Then...I have to be executed, like I promised.
[All the light in his eyes go out. He thought he could spend time with Harvey and the others again. He wanted to do this right for once. But he failed, and he has to accept defeat.]
no subject
Harvey tenses as the Monobears enter. This is the vote he wanted, but he doesn't want this.]
Is there...anything we can do? [It seems silly to ask, but he has to say something.]
no subject
[The Monobears form a semicircle behind Duster and stand still.]
I shouldn't be surprised. Without the Egg of Light, taking away your sad memories will be difficult. But...it's a shame. We were hoping you would join us.
[He turns his head to look at each student individually, ending with Harvey. The Monobears make their move and tug on his jacket.]
Time for me to go.
no subject
Harvey forces himself to meet Duster's gaze, jaw gritting too tight as he tries to suppress tears. He failed him. It's not clear what he could have done, aside from sacrificing everybody on the altar of the Tacky Pig King, but it feels like a failure.
He can't rest until he fixes this.]
See ya later, kid.
no subject
Duster wordlessly follows them off-stage.
The stage grows dark, as it did for every execution. When the lights return, the same sets from the first one decorate the stage. Duster takes the place of the first culprit, and the same bloody spectacle plays out, but less extreme so that Duster survives.
Then the stage is replaced with the second execution's props. Duster goes through the same punishment. And the next. And the final one.
He opens his tired eyes. His vision is pink with blood, but he can make out eight vague shapes in the distance. If he squints, he can make out the form of-
CRUNCH
Duster Woodya, Super High School Level Thief, Mastermind, is dead.]

The others are still here. He may not be best friends with all of 'em, but they're a team now. He trusts they're all on the same page regarding the guy behind all this.]
C'mon, everyone. We got a pig to kill.
